The Debate:

Fashion Illustrations

vs. Flat Garment Sketches

The debate: Fashion Illustrations vs. Flat Garment Sketches. Let’s break it down.

We often talk about these two sketching techniques in isolation, but marrying them together creates a more holistic view of the design journey.

Now, what’s the big difference between fashion illustrations and flat garment sketches?

Well, think of it like this: fashion illustrations capture the essence and vibe of a design, showcasing the styling aspects, while flat sketches are the blueprints, showcasing the technical details and structure.

It’s a dynamic duo that brings designs to life.

Many companies skip fashion illustrations and solely rely on flat garment sketches.

Why? Well, for most brands, especially mainstream and sports clothing, time is of the essence.

Fashion illustrations often take a backseat because they are not a vital player in the product creation cycle. Sure, some “key” outfits might be showcased as a fashion illustration, but it’s more of a highlight and sprinkled throughout the collection.

In high-end fashion, fashion illustrations play a bigger role because often, the designer enjoys this method of drawing. The fashion illustrations show the styling in how the garments are worn together in complete outfits. They also show the attitude or look that the designer is trying to achieve.

Technology has definitely impacted the role of tech pack creation in the design process. The rise of 3D software for fashion design offers more layering options and showcasing garments on full-length models with true proportions and shapes. It’s a departure from the artsy of fashion illustrations, but it brings a sense of realism that helps many departments visualize the garments before they are brought to life.

The choice between fashion illustrations and flat sketches ultimately lies in the hands of the designer and the company’s requirements. It’s a creative or technical call that shapes the narrative of each design.

What do you enjoy more? Do you like the fun artistic feel of fashion illustration, or do you prefer visualizing the garments in flat sketches in a more proportional way?

Remember: It doesn’t have to be one or the other if you’re a solo designer. When you do both fashion illustrations and flat sketches, it gives two great perspectives of the clothes!
