A Step-by-Step Guide to Drawing Faces

for Fashion Illustration

Drawing faces can be a real challenge for so many people. Fortunately, there are various methods to make this process easier. In the video above, I’ll be sharing a step-by-step guide to drawing faces for fashion illustration, using The Fashion Design Book. You can download this free guide from the book through the link in the description. If you already have the book, you can use the pages from the book.

The Fashion Design Book focuses on flat garment sketches. Flat garment sketches don’t usually include faces/hair/accessories. However, you may want to use the book as a reference for fashion illustration, which does require faces/hair/accessories. That’s why I’ve included this chapter in the book.

I highly recommend downloading the free guide that is used in the video above since it provides essential proportions and guidelines for drawing faces. It breaks down the process into easy-to-follow steps, making it accessible for both beginners and seasoned artists. The visual aid helps you understand the facial structure and guides you through each stage of the drawing.

In the video, we’ll review this guide step-by-step to drawing a proportionate face. I want you to practice with me as I show you how to do this. We’ll start with the basic head shapes and then add proportional guidelines as reference positions.

Once you’ve finished drawing the face, you can start to draw the hair and accessories. If you’re incorporating hair and accessories, use The Fashion Design Book’s library for inspiration. Add these elements to complement your fashion illustration.

For a clean and precise finish for rendering your fashion illustrations, consider using the finest tip black or brown marker available, preferably size 01 (0.1 mm) for the facial features. This allows you to add intricate details and achieve a professional look in your fashion illustrations.

If you don’t have The Fashion Design Book, download the free guide, follow the step-by-step process, and let your creativity shine in the world of fashion illustration. Have fun drawing many different faces and hair styles to compliment your designs.
