Draw Ruffles Like a Pro:
Add Dimension to Your Sketches
Drawing ruffles is probably my favorite of drawing garments. Adding dimension to your sketches with well-drawn ruffles can elevate your designs.
In the video above, I’ll guide you through the process of drawing ruffles like a pro, breaking down the essential shapes and techniques. Make sure to try these techniques along with me and practice as you watch.
Let’s start by exploring the different shapes or types of ruffles you might encounter in your designs. We have the gathered ruffle, circular ruffle, and a cascading ruffle.
A gathered ruffle is characterized by multiple small folds or wrinkles that are pulled or gathered together at one edge, creating a wavy or rippling effect. It takes an excess amount of fabric and reduces it down to a smaller length.
Next, consider a circular ruffle, resembling a fabric gently spiraling outwards. A circular ruffle involves fabric that spirals outwards in a circular shape. It is typically cut in a circular or semi-circular shape, contributing to a flowing and dynamic look.
Finally, a cascading ruffle often goes vertically on the garment. It flows vertically down the garment, resembling a waterfall effect. It creates a sense of movement and adds a dramatic touch to the overall design.
To infuse life into your designs, get loose with your hand as you draw ruffles or fullness! Embrace free-flowing movements to create natural curves and folds. This technique not only applies to ruffles but also works wonders for the hems of skirts and dresses. Imagine the fabric swaying with every step – your loose strokes will capture that dynamic movement effortlessly.
As you follow the guide and watch the video to practice, pay attention to how each stroke contributes to the overall design. Practice drawing ruffles and full hemlines repeatedly until you feel confident in your technique.
Now, let’s explore the fun part – incorporating ruffles into various styles and designs. Whether it’s a casual blouse, an elegant gown, or a playful skirt, ruffles can be adapted to suit many different stylish looks. Experiment with placements and lengths to find the perfect balance for your design.
Look at your own styles in your collection – do you have any with ruffles or ruffling effects? If not, it might be fun to add some ruffles to the new styles you create!
Have you enjoyed drawing ruffles in today’s lesson? I sure hope so! I’ll see you in the next one.
