Bonus – Rendering Fabric Drape
In the previous video, we drew circle skirts with two different fabric drape levels. Now, it’s time to render these skirts with art markers.
If this is your first time using markers, I recommend using the same color for the whole skirt. You’ll layer up the rendering with the same color.
As you become more advanced, you can use tonal colors for rendering. If you do this, choose another marker that is just slightly darker than the main color. If you go too far off of the tonality, the rendering does not blend and the result is less professional in appearance.
Here are the main tips:
- Go fast with markers because they dry quickly.
- Point the tip of the marker toward the drawn line at all times. Turn the paper as needed to keep the point of the tip toward the outer line as you fill it in from side to side.
- Go in a full up/down motion until you fill in the entire area.
- Let it dry for a moment before you add your next layer of rendering if you are using the same color for rendering. If you are using a darker color for rendering, don’t let it dry so that it blends better with the first layer.
- If you have shiny fabrics, there are often lighter highlights. This can be done by leaving the white of the paper showing in some areas or by using white paint on top of the markers.
- Use a fine-tipped black or brown marker to outline your edges and clean them up. These markers dry slowly so be sure to allow them to dry before smudging them with your hands. You may need to allow some time for the outlining process.
Markers are so much fun to render with! I always feel like a kid again when I pull my markers out. Enjoy the process!
