Design Like a Pro:
Use The Fashion Design Book
with Your Custom Croquis
Designing like a pro is not just about creativity; it’s about utilizing the right tools to bring your vision to life. Two tools that have become my go-to are The Fashion Design Book, paired with my customized croquis. In today’s video, I want to share two methods that have elevated my design game, making the process both enjoyable and efficient.
The first approach involves tracing, a technique that works wonders when possible, though it’s essential to note that it’s not always feasible with custom croquis. However, when it is, it provides a solid foundation to build upon. By using the tracing method, you’ll get acquainted with the different proportions of the body, and this is excellent for beginners.
On the occasions when tracing isn’t an option or if you are more advanced in sketching, you can instead reference The Fashion Design Book as a guide. Refer to the book to create new styles and add design details. Don’t let the multitude of design details overwhelm you; instead, use them as building blocks for your unique creations. Take one part here and another part there to see how to sketch these silhouettes and design details.
If you find yourself unsure where to begin, start with the silhouette. It sets the tone for your design and acts as a roadmap for the rest of the elements. The silhouette is the outside line of the garment.
Now, let’s talk about tackling the back sketch. The absence of back sketches in the book is intentional, designed to provide a bit of a challenge. Handling the back becomes much more manageable once you’ve conquered the front images. Watch the video to see how you’ll use the front to create the back.
As you delve into the process, consider examining garments from your existing collection. Look closely at workmanship and construction details, such as topstitching, seam placements, and dart positions. These elements can serve as inspiration and enhance the uniqueness of your designs.
Whether you’re tracing or referencing, remember to let your creativity flow. Embrace challenges, starting with the silhouette and then conquering the back sketches. If you don’t like something, erase that part and try something else until the design speaks well to you.
Now, get ready to embark on your creative adventure, armed with the knowledge and inspiration to bring your unique designs to life.
