Which Comes First:
Flat Sketches or Fashion Illustrations? (for portfolio or personal use)
If you’ve been following my previous videos, you know we’ve delved into the intriguing world of fashion design, exploring the fine points between flat sketches and fashion illustrations. Today, I want to share my personal take on a question that often pops up in the design process: Which comes first – flat sketches or fashion illustrations?
For me, the answer is clear, and it’s all about laying a solid foundation. Whether you’re curating your design portfolio or working on a personal project for yourself or a client, I always start with flat sketches. Let me tell you why.
Flat sketches, to me, are the backbone of the design process. They provide a technical blueprint, allowing the designer to see proportions realistically and work out the intricate details of a design. In the grand scheme of things, it’s an integral step that I believe should never be skipped. I’ve seen many home sewists wonder why their final garments didn’t align with their visions, and they wonder why their garments didn’t turn out how they thought they would. And more often than not, it’s because they overlooked the importance of flat sketches.
The beauty of starting with a flat sketch is the flexibility it offers. You can easily resize it to fit around a fashion illustration on the artboard or in a sketchbook. I’ve had moments where I draw something, only to change my mind or not like it when I render it. With a flat sketch, it’s as simple as erasing a line or creating a new sketch. A far cry from the time and effort it would take to rectify a misstep after the garment has been sewn.
So, how do you create compelling flat sketches? This is why I created The Fashion Design Book. It provides the fundamental guidance needed to bring your designs to life on paper. And here’s a tip: don’t forget to include stitching and design details in your sketches. This helps you think through the construction, an essential skill that strengthens your capabilities as a designer.
Mastering flat sketches and fashion illustrations isn’t an overnight feat, but a few simple tips can make the journey smoother. Besides using The Fashion Design Book, I recommend closely analyzing clothes to understand how they are assembled. This keen observation of garment construction adds a layer of depth to your designs, setting you apart as a designer or strengthening your sewist skills.
In conclusion, while fashion illustrations bring styling and personality to your designs, flat sketches are the unsung heroes that lay the groundwork for success. They offer a practical and efficient way to visualize your ideas before they come to life, ultimately saving you time and ensuring your creations align with your vision.
So, the next time you’re embarking on a design journey, start with the basics – start with flat sketches. Your future self and your sewing machine will thank you! Happy designing!
